📢 The easiest way to make people like you

William James, the first educator to offer a psychology course in the US, once said:

"The deepest principle of human nature is the craving to be appreciated."

We crave appreciation like a starving man craves food.

Humans spend their entire lives chasing appreciation and the feeling of importance.

  • The feeling of importance drove Amelia Earhart to try to become the first woman to fly around the world.

  • The desire drove scientist Marie Curie to conduct dangerous experiments with radioactivity.

  • It drove Steve Jobs to create the phone you're probably reading this on.

It is what drives humans to innovate and advance, without it we would still live in caves.

Some people are so desperate for the feeling of importance they fabricate entire stories to get it.

On 9/11, Tania Head claimed to have been in the south tower when the first plane struck. She told the media about the traumatizing horrors she saw, and how she lost her fiance in the attack. She ended up reading press reports on TV, leading a support group for survivors, and joining the former NYC mayor to visit ground zero.

But her story was a lie.

She made it all up.

Tania wasn’t even in the US during the attacks. Tania Head wasn’t even her real name. What she wanted was attention and admiration.

She wanted to feel important.

If people are willing to go to such lengths to receive appreciation, how much do you think people will like you if you just give it to them?

If there is any secret to making people like you, it is showing lots of sincere appreciation and giving genuine compliments. You can never give too many compliments, as long as they are sincere. Yet we have a habit of keeping our appreciation to ourselves.

If you want people to like you, break this habit and give more and better compliments.

I had a friend who had a habit of telling the people around him:

“(Their name), you know what I like about you…”

Then he would share a genuine and specific thing he appreciated about that person.

No wonder people seemed to just flock to him.
